WHO'S IN CHARGE HERE? Magpie is a former journalist, attempted historian [No, you can't ask how her thesis is going], and full-time corvid of the lesbian persuasion. She keeps herself in birdseed by writing those bad computer manuals that you toss out without bothering to read them. She also blogs too much when she's not on deadline, both here and at Pacific Views. Magpie roosts in Portland, Oregon, where she annoys her housemates (as well as her cats Medea, Whiskers, and Jane Doe) by attempting to play Irish music on the fiddle and concertina. If you like, you can send Magpie an email! WHO LINKS TO MAGPIE? Ask Technorati. Or ask WhoLinksToMe.

Some good news from Oregon.
The Oregon Senate has passed SB1000, which establishes civil unions for same-sex couples, and amends existing laws to prohibit discrimination on the basis of perceived or actual sexual orientation. The bill now goes to the state House of Representatives, where its fate is uncertain. A 'reciprocal benefits' bill has already been introduced into the House, but that bill provides for only a limited list of rights for same-sex couples. It does not address the issue of discrimination at all. | | Posted by Magpie at 2:59 PM | Get permalink

Sick day yesterday.
Nothing serious just allergies bad enough to keep us away from the computer. And today, we thought it a good idea to hold our own counsel about the events in London. We'll be back tomorrow. | | Posted by Magpie at 8:41 PM | Get permalink

Ooooooh, shiny!
The art of Mark Bryan! The painting below is just one example from a trove of largely political and satirical artworks. ![]() [Oil on canvas, 30 x 24", 2004] Ever since I can remember, I've been troubled by the state of things. Maybe it was all that talk about heaven in Sunday school. A perfect world, why isn't it like that here? I feel ripped off. Even the animals didn't eat each other in heaven. Imagine that. What you can do about the US Supreme Court.
The July Fourth holiday will soon be over in the US, and it'll be time to get back to the political battle over who will replace Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court. Wondering what you can do to help keep a neanderthal off the highest federal court? Whatever happens with the Supreme Court nomination battle that is about to ensue, it's going to happen fast. Here are some things you can do right now:If you have a blog, please post these action items on your site. If you don't, e-mail them to your like-minded friends and relatives so that they will help spread the word. On this Fourth of July ...
... we can't think of any better food for thought than these words from a July 4th blog post by a US soldier stationed in Mosul, Iraq. Here's part of what he had to say: One of the great things about America is that it represents something different to each person. I guarantee that George Bush sees America differently than a new immigrant, but that's only the beginning of the differences. Each of us uses a differnet mix of our liberties, each of us values certain things more than others. And by taking advantage of the unique experiences and knowledge that each of us has developed, we are a force to be reckoned with. In roughly 250 years our nation has risen to greatnes beyond anything that might have been imagined by the founding fathers, and we have done it because of our freedoms. Without the rule of law and civil liberties we would have nothing. The full post is here. | | Posted by Magpie at 12:00 PM | Get permalink

Ooooooh, shiny!
As you can see, Elvis is definitely in the building. But what's not obvious is that you're looking at a wall-sized mosaic made entirely from sticky notes. ![]() There's a picture of the almost-completed mosaic here, and do-it-yourself instructions over here.
